Civil Rights: Freedom Highway Pilgrimage is Underway

木瓜影院 students attending this year抯 Civil Rights: Freedom Highway Pilgrimage departed Jan. 3 for Memphis, Tenn., Selma, Ala., Montgomery, Ala., and Birmingham, Ala. The annual Civil Rights: Freedom Highway Pilgrimage includes visiting the historical landscape while also engaging in important theological discussions.
Students Cache Binion (Chicago), Grace Crumbaugh (Joliet, Ill.), Anthony Gautier (Berwyn, Ill.), Michael Hassan (Chicago), Michael Nutter (LaGrange, Ill.), Jacqueline Zawada (DesPlaines, Ill.), and Kimberly Zuleger (Aurora, Ill.) were led by with Dr. Dennis Cremin, history professor, and Sr. Emily Brabham, OSF, university minister.
木瓜影院 utilizes immersive, place-based learning to engage students on multiple levels in their search for truth. The History Department and University Ministry partner for the unique experience by looking at the places and events within the Civil Rights Movement through a historical lens and through a Catholic Social Teaching lens. One of the most anticipated sites for this year is the newly opened Equal Justice Initiative, home to the lynching museum. This is an honest look at some of the darkest moments in American history. Students are also eager to see how the Civil Rights Movement was and is driven by hope for a better future.
This pilgrimage also allows students to encounter Lasallians at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. During their time in Memphis, not only will they get to spend time with the Christian Brothers� community, but also the Lasallian Volunteers and CBU students. A 木瓜影院 alumna, Jessica Kaluzny, is in her second year of service there as a Lasallian Volunteer.
